Hard Drive Crash / Recovery
Losing a hard drive is becomming all to common an affair to deal with. It’s now about a week and a bit since the latest episode – and yes, I lost pretty much everything – and I’m still restoring applications & files. But I’ve been losing drives at a rate of about 1 every 2 years. At first I thought myself horribly unlucky (with drives, exceptionally so). But after talking to a few people – I get the sense I’m one in a growing number of storage-challenged.
Most hilarious of all was the chorus of "don’t you use bakcups?" "Why yes! Why didn’t I think of that?" would by my typical sarcastic retort. The thing is, there’s just no way a poor, underappreciated genius like me could possibly afford a RAID-5 storage array. And other backup solutions have now become impractical because hard drives are pretty cheap these days – may as just well buy another one, right?
But if you don’t allocate space exclsively for backups – it can disappear on you when it’s least convenient (not that it ever will be). And then there’s the question of where to put it. Some of my sutff is cross-backed up on other drives (i.e. file a, stored on drive b, file b on drive a, etc.) But at some point, it seems inevitably even with this appraoch loss is impossible.
Off site tape maybe? Wonder if that’s cheaper than RAID-5 after all is said and done…
