Web Developers’ Speculation on Adobe’s Macromedia Buyout Premature

CNet’s News.com and numerous other tech sector & business websites were carrying news of Adobe’s $3.4B share buyout of Macromedia.  And developers were among the first to react to the news giving the acquisition mixed reviews.

But it’s a little early to know what impact the deal will have on them.

Both companies enjoy supremacy in their respective markets.  But it might easily take a year or two for the companies to know what direction Adobe will take with Macromedia’s technologies.  If any.  The deal is intended to create a graphics dynasty that will have lasting power against competitors Microsoft and Apple, but neither has been able to gain much of a foothold in Adobe’s empire.

Market consensus seems to be heading toward a prediction that the less-successful ventures by both companies may mean retirement for a few technologies.  Developer concerns appear geared towrard elimination of larger titles – one speculating that Macromedia’s Freehand and Director could be in trouble.

But the bigger question here is why Adobe would even feel threatened with its PDF emerging as a document standard globally.  Ironically, speculation about the impact on standards (and even Microsoft’s alleged support of them in specific cases) circulates amongst industry pundits as rationale for Adobe’s purchase.

Funny – was it that long ago there were complaints M$ didn’t support open standards enough?
