PM Promises Election within 30 days of Gomery Commission Report

Paul Martin, speaking from the Centre Block of Parliament Hill, had promised an election within 30 days of the publication of the Gomery Comission Report.

Conservative Leader Steven Harper chimed in immediately afterward to denounce the Liberals as hopelessly corrupt, not commenting directly on Martin’s proposal for an election immediately after delivery of the Gomery Comission report.  Unfortunately, the Conservatives haven’t stepped back from the brink of looking like as bad an opportunist as those involved with the scandal direclty.

Harper addressed some of his comments to Québec, saying that his was a party of an uncorrupt "democratic alternative" to the Liberals.  While standing on the podium of federalism, it can only be seen as doubtful in Québec whether Harper would really be any better, any greater an alternative to Martin.  Indeed, the question must still be on the minds of Québeccers whether sovereignty itself is the only alternative given such a display by federalist politicians and institutions.

Gilles Duceppe, leader of the separatist Bloc Québecois, as expected fired an almost unpunctuated diatribe blaming the Liberals generally as an inherently corrupt party.  He paused to state his respect for Canada’s democratic institutions; but attacked those occupying those institutions to the very same effect as if they were irreperably corrupt.

Martin’s decision to speak directly to Canada tonight was probably both well-timed and a wise move, under the circumstances.  Only time will tell if the nation will give him the time he’s asked for – to let the trial of the Liberal party finish – before the electorate is called upon to pronounce judgement.
