MPAA Closes Two More Torrent Sites

Well the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) legal machine is at it again – two more legitimate, private file swapping sites have been shut down due to alleged copyright infringement: ShunTV.net and #BTEfnet.  In a statement released to the media, the MPAA cites the reationale for these closures and others:

"[We’ve] today announced that [we’re] filing lawsuits against six highly trafficked BitTorrent websites responsible for the illegal swapping of millions of dollars of motion picture and television programming. This is the first time that the MPAA has targeted TV-oriented sites for illegally swapping TV shows which has become a serious and growing problem. An Internet-monitoring company called Envisional reported recently that TV show piracy increased by 150 percent just in the past year."

But file swappers dispute the claim, arguing the lawsuits are largely frivilous – particularly given that much of the programming affected is being made available to audiences that can’t get access to the programming allegedly being swapped.  Wrote one file swapper on the Demonoid.com file swapping forum:

"Really, really can’t understand how it is a bad thing distributing The Daily Show to people who live outside of the USA. It’s not like there’s a great market for DVD releases of news satire som half a year-year after it was broadcasted. Yeasterday news satire is almost as old as yeasterday news."

In another development, one of the sites mentnioed in the MPAA press release – #BTEfnet – denies it or any of its members are actually being sued at all.  From the #BTEfnet companian IRC channel, announcements from channel operators flatly contradicted the claim:

"<@oblivionx> [Request] Message:[The #BT Website is currently down. Releases are on hold, possibly for the entire night, until we have a better understanding of the current situation. We have NOT been sued! Please be patient and do not PM the ops. We will keep you guys updated.] – SysReset 2.53"

So interesting days in the world of file swapping, certainly.  More details to follow as developments warrant…
