Microsoft Terminates Web-based NNTP Service

Sadly, Microsoft reports today that ithas terminated its web-based NNTP service (formerly at http://communities.microsoft.com/newsgroups) and is advising visitors to use Outlook Express.

In God’s name WHY!?!?!?!

It’s not like Outlook Express (OE) has turned the newsreader market on its ear and there seems to be no end to the commercial software plug-ins for Outlook 2003 that captures NNTP & RSS content.  But nothing in the "freeware" department, sadly.  And NNTP is still not facilitated within Outlook 2003 – at least not without the presence of Exchange Server. 😉

Any MS employee I’ve ever spoken to on the subject has always said NNTP was never a feature that found itself in demand.  But there’s gotta be a market for such things.  Maybe it’s time for me to bite the bullet and spend all that spare time I’ve got writing my own plug-in for Outlook.  How long could it take to learn the MS Office Outlook API? .
