Microsoft Community Newsgroups Reorg’d – Not Lost

In an earlier article, I’d commented that the good folks at Microsoft had screwed up bigtime with apparent cancellation of newsgroups.  In fact, that appears to not be the case…they’ve simply been reorganized – and added features no a new "managed newsgroups" facility.

Managed newsgroups suggest moderated topics only; not sure how far that goes just yet, but will likely have a chance to find out soon.

Usually Microsoft is fair and ethical, especially by comparison with (AOL) Time-Warner and similar ilk, when it comes to matters of free speech, which I believe to be the unspoken bottom line on this topic.AOL is the worst, apparently aiming to achieve complete control over not only what words we say, but even what topics we are allowed to discuss. The effect is that "negative" news items will not spread through the internet when TV and Radio networks are being silent about a story.A great example of this is the Anthrax Scare in the USA. The mainstream media dropped the story like a hot coal when it turned out that the anthrax being mailed to senators was manufactured in Fort Detrick, Maryland. This is widely reported on the internet, but few people are aware of it. Why? The mainstream TV news won\’t touch it.But there is a shift, towards the internet as a primary information source. In fact, it is no longer considered worthwhile to market to 18-35y males via television, but rather more useful to target them online. If Time-Warner, Ruppert Murdoc and other media monsters get their way, you won\’t hear the news that is unflattering to their allies, ever.Every time a new technology emerges, it is only a few years before a handful of corporations gain control over it. This was true of newsprint, radio, broadcast TV, cable TV, satellite TV and if we are not vigilante, the internet too.
