Old Debate Still Rages: OSS vs. Microsoft

Every company has its PR pariahs: often I’ve convicted Steve Ballmer (Microsoft’s CEO) on that charage.  But today, a review of a story on the News.com technolgy news website caught my eye and I found another Microsoft big-wig making some ill-considered remarks criticizing OSS (Open Source Software) development.
And his biggest beef with OSS?  Apart from a flippant remark or two shot from the hip for the benefit of his interviewer & maybe the non-tecchie audience, perhaps the biggest difficulty I have with his dialogue is characterizing OSS as somehow unscalable or even unupgradable.  This is just the kind of thing we’ve all heard for years from both advocates and detractors of OSS – and the debate gets a little wearisome after a while; only fanning the flames of techno-bigotry ever more in the name of making a buck than giving a honest, technical analysis of the merits of the architecture.
I suppose the industry might never outgrow this, but one need look no further than the list of article comments posted back to get a picture of how many mgiht disagree with this fellow’s characterizations.  (Many of those comments came from people claiming to not have any great love for OSS too.)

If Microsoft has such a problem with Open Source Software then why do they hire people like Gentoo Linux\’s founder and former Gentoo Chief Architect Daniel Robbins? With these people as developers you\’d think they would understand Open Source a bit better? They must feel theatend since Microsoft\’s version of Linux didn\’t sell because it cost $250 and big business\’ are making the switch to Open Source since it\’s free!Rob
