Hypocrisy Amongst Critics of IE on Standardization

It’s tough to be very patient listening to IE’s detractors lately.  The usual anti-MS rants abound, of course, around the upcoming release of IE7.  But recently I encountered amongst some of my colleagues a degree of trepidation over its support for W3C standards.
But when one runs across articles like this from CNet’s News.com concerning Microsoft’s contributions to standards adherance, I admit I’m at a loss to understnad the software giant’s detractors on the subject.  There are some very good reasons Microsoft could well have not been over-concerned with standards adherance:
  • the time it takes standards bodies to agree on a spec vs. product development timelines,
  • issues of disclosre & intellectual property; does one propose new technology or integration of new technologies with existing technologies with competitors, or
  • competitors domiating some bodes and not necessarily negotiating standards in good faith, as opposed to trying to derail efforts of another company developing similar technology.

The list could go on.  But one ought not be too hard on Microsoft on the subject of standards adherance; it’s not the only one in the game here – and far from being the only party failing to adhere to standards or pariticiate in standardization processes for the benefit of the marketplace as a whole.

And on those occasions when it does do so – applause is the appropriate response, is it not?  After all, standards save everyone time and money and adherance to them is worth encouraging.
