Can Common Sense Work in Gaza?

Something hasn’t been sitting well with me watching/listening to the coverage of the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza these past few days: was there not another solution that would have eventually been acceptable to the various stakeholders involved?

The obvious question (for me) that occurs is – if Israeli citizens living in Gaza and the West Bank don’t want to be a part of the withdrawal, then why not simply have extended the option to them of becoming Palestinian citizens so they could remain in the formerly occupied territories.  Or perhaps even better yet – indicate to them that if they remain they are actually going to be under the administration of the Palestinian Authority and not Israel anymore so that there aren’t these mass extractions going on today?

Yes, I realize it’s a complex situation and probably neither the Palestinian Authority nor Israel would be in favour of such an idea (to say nothing of the settlers), but it would have spared Israel from the hassle of having to extract by force people who had invested lives there.  The idea would, minimally, grant settlers in the territories the liberty of making their own choice.

If tradgedies like those of the woman who tried setting herself on fire today are to be avoided – maybe such ideas as that suggested above (which seem common-sense superficially) are ones that ought to be given a second, sober look.  All in the context of making the situation work somehow – all in the context of purusing peace in the region.
