From Whence a Politician’s Image Cometh…
For the past several weeks, on my morning drive in to work, I’ve been listening to the Lowell Green show on CFRA AM 580 here in Ottawa. It’s an entertaining talk radio programme covering issues of the day, with a heavily right-winged perspective, thanks in no small part to its host. And in keeping with the neo-libertarianism that’s oft reminicscent of such conservative points of view, a local issue concerning the banning of pesticide on local private property has got stuck in his craw and results in much crowing from time to time about how it all violates property rights (some of which is legitimate).
Now, for the record, I’m a renter and, as such, don’t have to worry about the toils of lawn care and the like. However, I don’t imagine pesticide as being either of serious enough concern to warrant Ottawa city council’s attention nor serious enough generally to pursue a ban in any event. I’d say let property owners do as they please in selecting lawn care products, until there’s sufficient evidence of harm to warrant a general ban – which there isn’t presently.
That said, things are getting a little silly. The CBC news story quoted above details just how far one of the sides in the issue is willing to go and I’ve gotta say – WOW! It’s pretty amazing just how petty / low people will go to have their own pet issue rammed down the throats of others. Maybe it would be a good idea for all parties concerned to take a breath, calm down and start discussing things rationally with proper attention to each other’s rights instead of using such tactics to get their way, everyone else be damned.
But this is Ottawa…not sure such radical thinking will prevail here. There aren’t many politicians left who actually care what the people thinnk enough to tackle an issue like grownups….
