Internet Hosting Injustice

Verizon earnings rise | Tech News on ZDNet

Is there no justice? One of the few redeeming qualities capitalism can boast is a tendancy to keep the provision of merchandise and services in line with the concept of "survival of the fittest".  Companies that deserve to survive do because they strike a balance of investment, customer satisfaction and employee contentment.  However, sometimes this rule gets broken; as seems the case with Verizon.

I’ve had to deal with Verison a couple of times in my career – and I can’t say either time was a trouble-free experience.  Often trouble tickets took days to get a response, the voicemail maze one has to walk through to get service is a joke and on business web hosting services – there are so many restrictions it’s barely practical to do anything beyond basic HTML with a web application.

The only guess I have about Verizon’s success is that the market is inundated with so many companies that offer mediocre service that the average person in the street simply doesn’t know where to find a company that knows both what they’re doing and how to treat customers properly.  Certainly Rogers (my ISP) isn’t a shining example – they can barely keep the Internet up in downtown Ottawa.  And even it is putting Bell (its leading competitor in this market) to shame with Internet services.  Were there an ISP that had the insfrastructure & could offer a quality service, they’d do well in this market.  One wonder why the opportunity here and elsewhere isn’t ceased upon more often.
