How could anyone argue that what’s happened to Andrew Rankin is fair? As if to highlight a massive flaw in our system of justice, a guy – probably innocent of any selfish motives – gets himself a prison sentence and has his livelihood taken away from him permanently while a treacherous ex-friend gets away with no jailtime and keeps over a million dollars of criminally-obtained funds.
Yes, this is the story of that Bay St. stock broker who got royally screwed by a system that is often under fire for letting crack dealers sell drugs to kids in schoolyards without penalty. And it’s yet another example of how we’re ready to throw police at the problem until it hopefully goes away, all the while never addressing the fundamental flaw that causes so much of the injustice: dubious decidions by crow prosecutors. They’re the one’s who will let sex offenders and street gang goons caught in high-speed chases & gun battles get off on a technicality, and the same people who are responsible for letting the real villian in this story get away with the crime, while coming down hard on Rakin – who is guilty only perhaps of poor judgement.
When are we gonna start turning the spotlight on the crown prosecutors who bungle these cases and cause so much of the rampant injustice in our legal system? Until something is done, we’ll remain prisoner to thugs romaing our streets while the purpetrators of victimless crime occupy space in our prisons better occupied by those who pose a real threat to society.
