Post-Gomery Perspective

And the media is all atwitter ovver the Gomery Report with many commenting that there’s never been so great a scandal on the Canadian political landscape.  Yet what amazes me is how the pundits can’t understand recent polls outside of Qubec that don’t have the LIberals in the toilet.  Some right-wing commentators (eg. Mikchael Harris of CFRA Radio in Ottawa) seem to have ingored the rational explanation for thhe missing weakness one might otherwise expect: Gomery isn’t an isolated phenomenon.  Canadians have seen it before.
Gomery is certainly a big scandal.  But its like have appeared even in my relatively short lifetime: notably the series of scandals that ended up making Mulroney administration go terminal – and eventually lead to the near-destruction of the Conservative movement in Canada.  Sinclair Stevens?  Remember him?  And there are a number of other PC names I could cite, but the Liberals don’t havea monopoly on corruption by any means.
Indeed the marvel isn’t why are Candians still clinging to supporting the Liberals in such numbers.  It’s why Quebecers are deluding themselves into thinking the Parti Quebecois is some beacon of morality lighting the way to truth an honesty while the Liberals are apparently chronically and even terminally corrupt themselves.  Therein lies a fiction worhty of puzzlement and greater coverage.
No, it’s not that hard to understand at all.  Canadians are genearlly nonplussed by their political establishment.  And what can be done about it is, unforutnately, in the hands of those whom we elect next.  And without due vigilance combined with some sound systemic checks and balances, it could all happen again.
Hopefully not anytime soon though….
