Microsoft Under (Deserved?) Business Media Fire

Was just watching CBC Newsworld’s Report on Business programme on evening TV.  A consultant from "Open Flow" (some unknown company with no hits on either Google or MSN search) summarized recent trouble Microsoft has been having as part of a general trend of slow responses to highly properietary, obfuscated core operating system flaws that its competitors are generally better at responding to.  This is CBC, whose bias in business reporting really seems a tad scandalous at times.  But here they’ve reached a new low in terms of misleading viewers:
  • no mention of the fact Microsoft software is under fire more often because it is simply more common,
  • that it’s "bad guy" image on the Internet amongst the hacker commnity makes it a riper target,
  • and that Windows has a few feature(like automatic updates) that make post-install patching actually easier than its competitors.

I’m not saying (or would I ever try) that these alone make Windows security superior in and of themselves.  What operating system has the best security is for me a subjective discussion centred on what the requirements for a given systems architecture are.  And depending on what the goal of a system is, there will be cases where Windows security is better.  And others where it will not be.

But to have some tech consultant come on-air and make sweeping remarks about security like that does a disservice to an audience that isn’t technically saavy.  Shame on CBC – and CBC Report on Business in particular for doing that tonight.
