Last Minute Thoughts re: Canada’s Federal Election

Thank goodness we’ve had some comic relief this election.  Canada’s politics, mercifully, haven’t followed the U.S. trend of becomming balkanized and "religious-right" vs. "commie left".  And I doubt it ever will.  But even so, seeing the joke on John Stewart’s "The Daily Show" concerning Canadian attack ads was really funny.  (It was especially great seeing the yanks take time out to pay attention to our political process to such an increasing degree – enough to even poke fun at us.)

Even I, at one point, got creative enough to do up a blog post on my company’s professional blogging site concerning voting for my pet gecko "Scamp".  The election had been a topic of far too serious conversation during a weekly conference call and I thought I’d make a modest contribution to adding some levity.

Anyway, despite writing my Conservative candidate with questions and not getting a response to my questions (via email), I have decided to go right this time around.  I can’t in good conscience allow the Liberals (whom I usually find myself supporting) for the corruption in the past few years.  They need to clean house a lot more than our current PM will do – he’s got too much loyalty for those close to him and defends them overly contrary to public interest in my opinion.  For that the governing party must be punished.

My Conservative vote is "soft" though.  I don’t like Conservatives’ attitudes toward minorities, like gays, lesbians and bisexuals.  Their policy says one thing, while most of their membership says or thinks quite another.  Harper will have to keep the wing-nuts tightly reigned in for me to support them again in the future.  And I’ll be watching closely to ensure current agreements signed with aboriginals are honoured.  If not, Conservatives can count on me to help defeat them next time around.

Indeed, for many in Canada, this will be a trial run at Conservative government and it’s gonna be tough for them to not screw this up good.  They will most likely be in a minority government situation and we could be back a the polls again in very short order.  After this too the Liberals will have been punished to the satisfaction of most in the country, so sustained Conservative government will take a degree of moderation that I’m not sure the party will ultimately be able to stomach.  Time will tell – but they’d best be careful.

Because next time – they’ll be competing with the Liberals bearing baggage of their own decision-making.

Despite these cited shortcommings, I decided it was best to support the Conservatives also to send a message to Quebec conserning what the rest of Canada would tolerate in terms of its Government.  I’m sure we’ll see some Quebec Conservatives elected this time around, making them a truly federal party and hopefully that’ll bode well for the future of federalism in Quebec.

At the very least, the next few months in Parliament will be interesting; Conservative governments in Canada usually have trouble forming alliances and can’t stay in power very long.  Indeed, the Liberals & NDP could form some kind of coalition government if the Conservatives can’t prove themselves able to govern.  Trudeau was able to steal the seat of government out from Joe Clark in a similar fashion once before….
