Warning re: MS SQL Server 2005 Express (Un)Install

One always wants to make sure when they install a beta product from any vendor that one can back out of that install if something goes wrong.  Well, for a couple of hours tonight an attempt to upgrade to a version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition from the Express version of same appeared to be going tragically wrong.  And, as is my practice, I’m reporting about it here now for those few who might gain something from my experience.
This time though, there’s not that much to tell beyond stating that I’m not entirely sure installing the Express version of SQL Server is the greatest idea.  For now, if I’m in a bind and need a test instance of an SQL database, I’m likely to stick with the MSDE.  The rationale is that I couldn’t back out of the Express install while attempting to install Visual Studio 2005.  The offending DLL that VS2005 didn’t like was never cited nor found, but the installer simply required that SQL Express get the boot.  On the uninstall attempt, a vague error message was returned saying "Error 0x8123456 has occurred…" with an OK button. (That’s not the error message, but I got through the trouble regardless of that – read on.)  I rebooted to safe mode, made a similar attempt with an error box telling me part of the Express version couldn’t be uninstalled in safe mode.  In my vew that really ought not happen ever.  But whatever….and I cheerfully went back to normal mode.  After which, without loading any other software, I went directly to Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs and was suddenly able to do the uninstall per the steps outlined in Q908452.
The experience of getting an error during the uninstall process was a little scary, making me rethink installing SQL Express under any circumstances – partucularly when it can’t be uninstalled in safe mode.  Haven’t read about this anywhere else, so am mentioning it here.  Ta da! 😉
