If only I’d seen this when….

Unfortunately, it’s only recently that I’ve had the chance to catch up on any reading of my favourite tech journals (see the updated "Reading List" section, below and right n this page).  While sipping coffee and doing some of that this long weekend, I discovered an article that might have given me some idea what to expect on a project I worked on late last year that involved drilling into the taxonomies of MS Office documents to extract data in response to search queries fro an educational portal application I was working on.

MSDN Magazine has an editorial section called ‘End Bracketwhich in February 2002 was devoted to working with C# in the same context as is normally the domain of VBA.  And it illustrates the point nicely: for those working with Office documents from the .NET framework, one needs to be wary of the dependancy on COM or working with COM-like structures to get anything done.

My approach involved creating wrappers in the business logic to interface with the COM interfaces involved to get out of the various architectures what I wanted.  But it was pretty messy.  Additioanlly, there was a fair bit of trouble working with OpenOffice documents.  Don’t have the links anymore (I looked quicckly & couldn’t find ’em) but I know there are .NET libraries out there for accessing the APIs (normally extended to Java developers) for the various types of OpenOffice products too.  And they’re even messier, I found – at least to do simple stuff with.
