IE7 Change Could Impact UI on Many Websites!

I dunno, but I think there’s been too little attention paid to this so far.  This weekend, I successfully installed Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 (on a worktation that wasn’t running a "genuine" copy of Windows – yes I have a key, but the WGA fails on one workstation for reasons I won’t go into here).  Insodoing, I made a surprising dscovery….

The above image differs with the appearance in IE7 in one key way: the URL is forcibly displayed within the dialogue.  Many sites leverage JavaScript to disable the appearance of a URL – some few even rely on the ability to ensure images can’t be downloaded or so that items on a web page can be displayed without being downloaded.

This approach was never secure, and – to almost any web deveoper – completely ineffective.  So long as HTML can be downloaded from a site to an application, there’s alaways going to be a way to isolate and download content.  However, at minimum the forced appearance of the address bar in web pages formerly relegated to the role of dialog boxes will require changes to the layout(s) of potentially many thousands, perhaps millions of websites.

Admittedly, my review of this development is incomplete and there may yet be a means by JavaScript to ensure the address bar can be removed, but again a change to existing web pages would be required.

Potential trouble is also on the horizon for IE7 where CSS & ActiveX controls are concerned, the fomer may potentially be as pervasive and visible as the address bar issue cited here – and certainly more disruptive.  However, since the issues where CSS are concerned are the result of non-compliance with web standards and using hacks to accomodate non-implemenation of features on IE6, one has to see these issues as more the responsibility of the individual website admins than Microsoft.
