Canadians, Canadian PM: Unbothered by Canadians Killed by Israel

Am now down to my final day(s) at Ottawa General Hospital. As I await release this coming Sunday, I’m finding myself increasingly annoyed with my (Canadian) government. And this isn’t anger of the ordinary kind where the government is concerned. I mean really, really angry. It’s about Israel – and it’s lies about what it’s up to Lebanon.

All governments lie. That’s mostly because in one form or another all governments are comprised of politicians, most of whom either lie about their intentions outright or who make promises they later can’t seem to find ways to keep. And I’m mostly numb (aren’t we all) to the falsehoods that come out of all government mouthpieces. But when it comes from nations bombing others and lives are being lost by the minute…well it gives rise to very piqued emotions. Especially when one’s countrymen are dying in the region.

Most incredible of all so far as I’m concerned is the attitude of my surviving countrymen to this situation in Lebanon: our Prime Minister has come out in favour of Israel from the very beginning – perhaps as a means to cozy up to the United States President. And even after Canadians started coming home in body bags, our newly-minted PM still stands behind Israel…marking a significant shift in Canadian foreign policy toward the region so far as I can tell. And what to Canadians when polled say about it all? Perhaps a slight majority back the PM??? In the name of God – WHY?

Isreal, in a unmitigatedly hostile act attacks a UN observer post playing host to a batallion of Canadian soldiers, another Canadian dies when Israel (which farcically calls the incident an "accident") attacks the outpost to retaliate for statements made against Israel at the UN by Secretary-General Kofi Anan. Yet it’s not Anan’s countrymen who are paying the price; no that price is paid in Canadian blood – to which Israel is completely indifferent, despite Canada’s support.

When is this Prime Minister going to stop standing up for George Bush and start standing up for Canada and Canadians again? Minimally, Israel needs its ambassador expelled for the 8 Canadian children killed and Canada’s UN peacekeeper killed in the region. Anything short of this would constitute grounds for only the most justifiable degrees of outrage by every Canadian. And if there is any further talk of actually agreeing with Israel’s arrest of a Canadian on trumped-up spying charges – well MSN censors likely won’t permit the words I’d have in mind for this Prime Minister then. Why is Canada’s Foreign Affairs department ignoring the family’s calls in that case??? How about just telling Israel to consider all treaties between our nations "on hold" until they rejoin the "community of nations" and take a shot at obeying international law, hrmmm?

And where are the rest of my fellow Canadians on this; what seems so perfectly obvious to me? Where is the Liberal party? Asleep?
